About Glenda Garland

I hail from a part of Michigan that has never seen a house like the one above: a little town outside Flint, which General Motors and Michael Moore put on the map, and which my dad found because he wanted to become a professor of mechanical engineering. That explains why I studied biology and English in college: my physics background was written on the impermanent backs of dinner napkins. It also explains why I began writing about places far, far away.

Since graduating from college (I went to the University of Michigan – Go Blue!), my husband Scott and I have been all over the country pursuing graduate schools and then interesting jobs. We’ve lived in Berkeley, CA for my masters, gone back to Ann Arbor, MI for my husband’s law school, then on to Kansas City, MO, Portland, OR, Boston, MA, suburban Maryland, and now Boston, MA again. We’ve painted four houses, and joke about imposing our own color scheme on the world. Hopefully this will be the last one.

We are thankful to have two great kids: Jared, 13, and Samantha (Sammy), 11, and a hound dog mutt named Honey.

I have been writing forever, and can’t imagine not writing. I started out in science fiction many many moons ago with a space opera so atrocious I laugh when reading it. I credit the six-week Clarion Science Fiction Writing Workshop at Michigan State University for forming me as a writer. The craft they taught was incredible, but more important was the training to withstand and even embrace criticism. Clarion is still going, too, so if any of you are budding SF/F writers, let me know and I’ll put you in contact with them.

I am now writing as much as I can, and always have projects in mind. I’m also a freelance copywriter. You can check out my other hat here: www.garlandcopywriting.com.

When I’m not working, I love hiking with my family, jogging, having friends over, and doing stained glass and other crafts.
